How to Play 4-Letter Wordle

How 4-Letter Wordle Differs from the Classic Game

Dropping from five letters to four changes the whole puzzle. The pool of possible answers is smaller - this game draws its daily words from more than 1,600 common 4-letter English words - so the solution is always a word you know. The catch: with only four tiles of feedback per guess, every round tells you less about the answer.

Letter frequency matters even more in short words. In our 4-letter pool the most common letters are A, E, O, R, I, L and T, so an opener built from them almost always lights up something. But short words also cluster into families - RATE, LATE, GATE and DATE differ by a single letter, and telling them apart can burn two or three guesses if you are not careful.

The guess economy flips too. Six tries for four letters sounds generous, but less information per guess means the endgame is often a choice between near-identical words. Strong players spend their first two guesses covering as many distinct letters as possible and only then start solving.

Best Starting Words for 4-Letter Wordle
A good opener uses four distinct letters and leans on the most frequent ones in English. All of these are valid words in this game:
  • TALE - two top vowels plus T and L, four of the seven most common letters in the 4-letter pool.
  • RATE - swaps in R, the strongest consonant in short English words; a hit here narrows things down fast.
  • COIN - covers O and I plus C and N, a perfect second guess when TALE or RATE reveals little.

Whichever you pick, make sure your first two guesses share no letters - testing eight distinct letters is the fastest route to the answer.

Strategy Tips for 4 Letters
  • Never reuse a gray letter. With only four slots, one wasted tile costs a quarter of a guess.
  • Watch out for word families: if you reach _ALE or RA_E, list every fitting consonant before you type - there are usually more than you think.
  • Yellow tiles are gold in short words: a confirmed letter has only three other possible positions, so re-place it immediately.
  • Stuck between several candidates? Spend one guess on a word made of the letters that differ between them - a single probe can separate a whole family.

Not as much as you would expect. There are fewer possible answers, but each guess also returns less feedback, and short words often differ by a single letter. Most players find it faster, not easier.
